Rijeka Shipyard Building New Generation Scenic Eclipse Cruiser
February the 27th, 2025 – The Rijeka 3 Maj shipyard is constructing a new generation Scenic Eclipse cruiser. The news follows reports of Australian businessman Glen Moroney being present there.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, a steel cutting ceremony was held at the Rijeka 3 Maj shipyard, marking the beginning of the construction of a new luxury ship for the renowned Scenic Group.
This important project will be realised through the cooperation of MKM Yachts and 3 Maj Rijeka 1905, based on a hull construction contract signed back in April 2024. The steel cutting ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Economy Minister Ante Šušnjar, Rijeka Mayor Marko Filipović, Deputy County Governor of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Vojko Braut, Australian Ambassador Richard Rodgers, Scenic Group ower Glen Moroney, President of the Board of Directors of 3. MAJ Rijeka 1905, Vjera Marić, and Director of MKM Yachts, Saša Čokljat.
“The project that Glen Moroney has been working on with Croatia for a decade now is fascinating for several reasons. The ships that have been built here, Eclipse and Eclipse II are state of the art in the polar cruising industry – there are no better vessels than those. That means that best ships currently sailing in the world’s oceans were built in Croatian shipyards,” stated a proud Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
He thanked all involved for duly recognising the quality of Croatian shipbuilding. “This symbolic act of cutting steel testifies to the ambition and tenacity of this Rijeka shipyard with the help of MKM Yachts. Sophisticated ships that aren’t built anywhere else will continue to be built here in Croatia,” he added.
This project represents a continuation of the successful cooperation between all parties involved and confirms the trust that the Scenic Group – which is otherwise the world’s leading luxury cruise company – has in the expertise and capabilities of the Croatian shipbuilding industry. The successful realisation of the first two polar cruisers, Scenic Eclipse I and II, the latter of which was completed and delivered three months ahead of schedule and under budget, has laid a solid foundation for this new cooperation.
“This new generation Scenic Eclipse vessel isn’t just another project – it’s proof that this Rijeka shipyard, MKM Yachts and the Scenic Group are all working together to make the entire Croatian shipbuilding industry proud. On this occasion, I’d like to emphasise something I firmly believe in: ships are built by people, not by machines. With this project, we’ll once again prove that Croatia boasts exceptionally high-quality engineering staff, as well as hardworking and very skilled shipbuilders,” said the owner of the Scenic Group, Glen Moroney.
“We rightly consider our successes so far as a steel structure for further cooperation and we’re now ready to welcome a new challenge – the construction of an even larger and more sophisticated expedition cruiser,” said the director of the MKM Yachts company, Saša Čokljat.
A detailed presentation of the project to the public will follow later this year, but the ship was announced with the following encouraging superlatives – bigger, better, more exclusive. The vessel otherwise belongs to the Eclipse series and represents a new generation of ultra-luxury cruisers. These shops are making a significant leap forward in technology and setting new standards in luxury compared to its award-winning predecessor, the Scenic Eclipse II.
