Croatia Remains Among Countries With Highest Inflation Rate
February the 25th, 2025 – Croatia has remained among the countries with the highest inflation rate according to the latest data released by Eurostat.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, inflation across the European Union (EU) and the Eurozone accelerated yet again in January this year. Unfortunately, Croatia has once again ranked among the countries with the highest inflation rate, and therefore the strongest price growth. It is now right alongside Romania, the latest Eurostat data showed on Monday.
Looking at the situation at the EU level, the annual inflation rate measured by the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HIPC), which allows comparisons between EU Member States, stood at 2.8% in the first month of this year. Looking back to December 2024, prices at the EU level rose by 2.7%.
When we observe how things stand with the entire Eurozone, consumer prices were 2.5% higher in January than they were back at the beginning of 2024, Eurostat confirmed its preliminary estimate. Back in December, they had risen by 2.4%.
Casting our timeline back to January 2024, the annual inflation rate in the EU was 3.1%, and in the Eurozone, 2.8%, Eurostat tables show. The highest price increase in the Eurozone back in January was again in services, by 3.9%, which is slightly lower than it was in December.
Fresh food prices also rose slightly, by 1.4%. Energy prices rose by 1.9% compared to the beginning of last year. In December, they remained at the level they were at back at the end of 2023.
Core inflation climbed to 2.7% in January, the same level it had been at during the previous four months.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices in the EU remained stable, while in the Eurozone they decreased by 0.3%, statisticians calculated. In December, they increased by 0.3 and 0.4%, respectively.
croatia is still infamous for its high inflation rate
Neighbouring Hungary recorded by far the highest annual inflation rate in January 2025, at a whopping 5.7%. Romania recorded the strongest price growth in the EU throughout last year, and in January it fell to second place with an inflation rate of 5.3%.
Croatia has remained among those EU countries with the highest inflation rate. In fact, it’s close to the aforementioned countries. Croatia’s consumer prices as measured by the HICP in January 2025 were 5.0% higher than in the same month back in 2024. In December, they increased by 4.5% on an annual basis.
In January 2024, prices measured by the HICP in Croatia increased by 4.8 percent on an annual basis.
The monthly comparison shows a steady and deeply unwelcome price growth in Croatia in January, by 0.2% compared to the previous month. In January, prices also increased by more than 4% on an annual basis in Belgium, Poland and Slovakia.
The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Denmark in January, at a mere 1.4%. Ireland, Italy and Finland followed the Danes with annual price increases of 1.7%.
