Osijek-Baranja County Declared 2025 European Wine Capital

February the 19th, 2025 – Osijek-Baranja County, located in the vast plains of eastern Croatia, has been declared the 2025 European Wine Capital.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Osijek-Baranja County has been declared the 2025 European Wine Capital. This prestigious title was presented to Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Mato Lukić by Mostar Mayor Mario Kordić at a ceremony in the city on Monday evening.

The European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN) declared Osijek-Baranja County the European Wine Capital ‘Dionisio’ for 2025, which will certainly put the spotlight on eastern Croatia’s abundant, impressive, yet chronically overlooked wine production. Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Lukić also noted that this is fantastic recognition for this large eastern county that is so often forgotten.

“Since we’re basing the future of our tourism on our four vineyards of which we’re particularly proud, namely Baranja, Erdut, Đakovo and Feričan, we’re very pleased to hold the title of European City of Wine in 2025,” said Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Mato Lukić.

He pointed out that it is particularly important for this county that last year it was declared the friendliest region in Croatia, as well as among the top ten friendliest regions in the entire world. “This latest Dionisio title certainly means a lot to us. It’s an additional brand and an additional promotion of Croatian continental tourism. It shows that we’re all very much ready and on the right track,” said Lukić.

Mostar Mayor Mario Kordić stated that cooperation between Mostar in neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina and Osijek-Baranja County is reflected in numerous joint projects.

“We help each other when it comes to international projects and we always need a partner and experience from Croatia when we carry out trilateral projects with Croatia,” revealed Kordić.

During the ceremony, Osijek-Baranja County presented its authenticity and rich eno-gastronomic offer, thanks to which it won the title for 2025.

The RECEVIN organisation is otherwise a well known European network of wine cities that has been awarding awards under the title European City of Wine and European City of Wine Dionisio since 2012. It is done with the aim of duly recognising European cities that stand out for their support and promotion of wine culture.
